“Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” Win the #Oscars – Recap

0

Welcome to The I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast – Special Oscar Edition. The Oscars just ended and we just finished recording our recap. Gravity wins all the technical awards, “Dallas Buyer’s Club” wins all the acting awards and “12 Years a Slave” wins Best Picture.

Why do we watch the Oscars? How do you define the best? My favorite movie was “American Hustle,” but is it better than “12 Years a Slave?” How do you answer that? Overall I was happy with the winners, but I would have been happy if the night went in a completely different direction most likely.

We spend a lot of time talking about “12 Years a Slave” and it really affected all three of us. Slavery was the American Holocaust and we never refer to it that way. Sean points out that there are pictures of slave owners on our money…still. Hitler’s not on any money in Germany…think about that.

There were great moments on Sunday night. Lupita Nyong’o’s acceptance speech was amazing. Matthew McConaughey’s was a lot of fun. Jared Leto was great. Ellen was funny, but the show was too long. Too many pointless montages, too many pointless musical numbers. The big losers of the night were John Travolta and Bette Midler. Let’s not forget about Kim Novak’s Face.

Peter Berg #WetTShirtContest

Welcome to The I Hate Critics. It’s award season so lets talk about the comedy of the year “Hercules.” “Hercules” should have advertised itself as a comedy. This is a wanna bee “300” with no fun. “Lone Survivor” took a real life story and took it a little too “Ramboy.” Then Bob goes on to wonder what every movie would look like if Peter Berg directed it.

Speaking of disappointment, “August: Osage County.” It’s probably good on the stage, but not so much on the screen. Sean’s top two movies of the year are “Her” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Josh and I can’t argue with him. Both movies are award worthy. We had such a good time talking about these two films.

Our undisputed classic is “Amelie.” This is a romantic comedy that is also an art film. Everybody I know that has seen this loves this movie and it surprises me that they love this movie, but it really is that good.

This week in 1984 a soft-core porn named “Hot Dog…The Movie.” There was a wet t-shirt contest in it. Our contest this week is to come up with a movie that made it to the theater that includes a wet t shirt contest since “Real Cancun” not including “Piranha 3D.”

Our trailers this week are:

“G.B.F.”
“Kite”
“Kick Ass”
“Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden”
“Life Itself”

2013 Year in Review: The Wolf of Wall Street & Grudge Match

0

Welcome to The I Hate Critics 2013 year in review. First we’re going to talk about Justin Bieber’s “Believe.” It was dumb so we moved on to the highly anticipated “Grudge Match.” Sean liked it!!!! “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” divides Sean and Josh. “The Wolf of Wall Street” pisses both Sean and Bob while Josh watched Keanu Reeve’s career flash before his eyes.

“Captain Phillips” Kills “Machete”

0

Welcome to “I Hate Critics” The World’s Greatest Movie Podcast. This Tom Hanks takes an impressive real life story and gives it a taste of Hollywood while most likely grabbing another Oscar nomination. While Mel Gibson got a taste of what his career had become in “Machete Kills.” I for one love the grind house style films that Robert Rodriguez, but it sounds that even if you’re like me, you’re probably not going to care for “Machete Kills.”

This episode it was me (Bob Zerull), Film Critic Sean Patrick, Josh Adams from the Film Fan Perspective and our special guest was Faith.

The ‘Undisputed Classic’ is “Das Boot.” Classic is a strong word this World War 2 submarine movie. It’s very long, you find yourself rooting for Nazi’s and it’s unanimously agreed that this works best as a mini series.

In this week in 1983 we got Robert Altman’s “Streamers,” an underrated film that was ahead of its time.
