This week we’ve got several new movies. It’s Hunger Games week. While not as many people went to go see this movie it’s actually far and away the best of the series. It’s timing is perfect and it’s really well done. Spotlight is an incredible movie, one of the years best. Everybody in the movie is award worthy. The Secret in their Eyes is a little disappointing, but only because it could’ve been amazing. The Night Before is hilarious.
Top Five this week is journalists in the movies: We talk about Clark Kent, Alexander Knox, Billy Batson, Sweet Polly Purebred, The Paper, Broadcast News, Almost Famous, Anchorman, His Girl Friday, The Insider, Citizen Kane and more.
For our Undisputed Classic we take on Battle Royale
In 1985 White Knights
Our trailers this week are:
How to be Single
Gods of Egypt
Star Wars – Honest Trailer
Who would have thought that in a year that includes an Avengers movie and a Star Wars movie that Jurassic World would have been the biggest movie of the year….so far? Jurassic World is one of the best monster movies I’ve seen in awhile. I was alone in thinking this however. Sean liked it but has it behind Furious 7, Avengers and Mad Max this year. In my opinion only Mad Max is better and more fun. Then there’s Josh who couldn’t not watch it as a scientific drama rather than a monster movie. His loss.
We also take a look at Kyle Smith’s article on how women can’t possibly comprehend Goodfellas. Obviously we disagree with him however what offends us more than his unintentionally sexist theme is his offensive take on Goodfellas comparing it to Entourage. Fuck you Kyle Smith.
The I Hate Critics podcast has been asked to be a part of Lebowski Fest in Milwaukee Wisconsin the weekend of Aug 21 and 22nd. Please if you’re in the area we’d love to hang out and get to know some of you.
We asked the audience in honor of Jurassic Wolrd being released this week, what their favorite monster movies were. We talked about your movies as well as King Kong (all of them) and Jurassic Park.
1985 – Prizzi’s Honor, D.A.R.Y.L., and Secret Admirer were released.
Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 2
Rock the Kashbah
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Avengers Age of Ultron has finally been released. Josh and I watched it with a very critical eye. The action was unintelligible, the dialogue was not strong, the story line connecting all these movies together has major holes in it. Then Sean, our resident film critic managed to watch the movie for what it was, a summer blockbuster that is a lot of fun. You say tomato I say…this doesn’t work as well when you type it out.
Nathan Rabin has been canned by The Dissolve
Robert Downey Jr shits on indie film.
Mae Whitman passed over in “Independence Day 2”
The Baltimore Riots and “The Purge”
Our Does it Hold Up segment was inspired by Bruce Jenner. We took a look at Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Crying Game. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is truly one of the great rock musicals of all time while the offensive marketing campaign really ruins The Crying Game experience.
1985 – Chuck Norris is Chuck Norris in Code of Silence. But it would have been awesome if he was in Gymkata. Anthony Edwards made Gotcha and Johnny Depp did Private Resort.
Fifty Shades Darker
The Irrational Man
